COMMUNITY EVENTS

At Animal Emergency Hospital, we feel it is important to give back to the community we belong to. We are pleased to donate our time, as well as our financial contributions to the West Michigan community that has been so kind to us.

July 2017: Habitat for Humanity

In July of 2017, staff from AEH volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity build. This has become an annual event that everyone enjoys immensely! This year staff assisted with landscaping, wall trim, and installing floors! Despite an afternoon downpour, the staff was able to get quite a bit accomplished in a small amount of time. A great time was had by all and knowing that this home would benefit a young family made the experience more memorable. We cannot wait until our next opportunity to help this amazing organization as well as members of our community!

June 2017: Montcalm County 4H Fair Auction

On June 29th Dr. Comer represented the Animal Emergency Hospital, at the Montcalm Co. 4H Fair auction. He purchased several animals and chatted with the kids about animal husbandry. Two of the animals were donated to a local food bank. See our blog for more about this wonderful event.

June 2017: K9K Race

On June 17th, staff from AEH participated for the second time in the Grand Rapids K9K Race. This race benefits several organizations such as the Grand Rapids Police Department K9 Unit Foundation and the Michigan Thin Blue Line. This race also holds a  special place in our hearts as it was organized by the family of one of our teammates. The K9K was put together in memory of Andrew Elliott Rusticus who passed away unexpectedly in 2012 while training to become a K9 officer. This race is a great way to remember Andrew as well as bring the community together to support many great local organizations. The staff from AEH brought their furry companions and walked a 3K and socialized with other members of the pet community!

May 2017: Kid's Food Basket

In May staff from AEH returned to Kid’s Food Basket to volunteer packing brown bag suppers. This year, staff spent their time individually bagging hard-boiled eggs, an essential source of protein in the Kids’ Food Basket sack suppers. In just an hour’s time, the AEH staff was able to bag close to 1,000 eggs to be distributed to local elementary schools! This volunteer opportunity has become a favorite of AEH. It is a great way to give back to the community and a rewarding experience! If you want to learn more about the work they do at The Kids’ Food Basket or if you are interested in donating or volunteering, check out their website here.

April 2017: Students with Children

Students with Children is an organization on the campus of Ferris State University. The purpose of this organization is to allow students with families to come together for networking, socializing, and to support each other. The non-traditional student usually has other distractions like work, spouse and children that impact their ability be involved like a traditional student so they don’t feel as connected. Studies have shown the more involved students are on campus, the better they do academically. In April, we proudly sponsored their Inaugural Easter Egg Hunt that was also open to the entire Big Rapids community. The students in this organization planned and ran the entire event. In addition to the egg hunt, they also had food and other activities planned. A crowd of 200 was anticipated, but they had an “egg-cellent” turn out of over 450 participants!

July 2016: Habitat for Humanity

In July 2016, the staff had the privilege and honor to help a U.S. Marine veteran and his family finish up their Habitat home. We did a lot of final touches to help make the house a home which included painting, mowing and installing appliances. On the day of dedication, one of the little boys was so excited to show us his new bedroom with the “biggest window”. It’s moments like these that make giving back to the community a priceless experience.
