Dr. Gary Ryder

Dr. Ryder grew up in Howell, Michigan. He earned a BS in Physiology from Michigan State University in 2003. He then went down to St Kitts in the Caribbean to attend veterinary school at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. While in veterinary school, he completed a course with Wildlife Vets in South Africa assisting with large game medicine and surgery. He then completed a clinical year at University of Wisconsin. He loves being part of the veterinary community and presides as a board member with the SPCA of Southwest Michigan as well as an officer with the Southwest Michigan Veterinary Medical Association. 

Following veterinary school, Dr. Ryder practiced at Great Lakes Veterinary Specialists in Cleveland. He then moved back to Michigan in 2008 where he helped grow VCA Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Clinic of Kalamazoo over the following 15 years. In 2023 he decided to make a career change and joined the wonderful doctors and staff of Animal Emergency and Specialty Hospital of Grand Rapids. His professional interests include: emergency surgery, shock therapy, wound management, exotic animal medicine/ surgery and mentoring of newly minted veterinarians. 

Dr. Ryder resides in Kalamazoo with his two sons, Zayden and Roman, as well as his partner Kaitlynn and a menagerie of critters that bark, purr, slither and swim. When not at work, he enjoys traveling, playing hockey, golfing, telling dad jokes and being disappointed weekly by the Lions… but, THIS is the year!
